Franciscan Sisters Honored in Diocese of Omaha

The Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity received a letter from the Family Life Office of the Diocese of Omaha thanking them for contributing “God-given talents and skills toward ministry in the  Archdiocese.” All of the members of the Franciscan community that ever served in the Omaha Diocese over the years have been chosen to receive the Rural Aging Ministry Award, an award that recognizes service to the Catholic Church through service and concern for elders in the rural reaches of the Archdiocese. This year’s Outstanding Ministers Awards ceremony is on May 21, 2008 at St. Patrick Church in Fremont.
The Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity have been formally involved with outreach to the elderly in northeast Nebraska since 1905, and informally involved since their arrival at St. Mary’s Parish, West Point in 1885. The community sponsors Franciscan Care Services, West Point, NE. in which St. Joseph Retirement Community, a licensed assisted living community,  is a vital part of the ministry. To think Monsignor Joseph Ruesing’s vision for the beloved elderly in West Point shines brightly through our Sisters who continue to give generously to all. It is good to hear this good news!
Though I have never served in Nebraska, I know the Sisters are doing good work in the Health Care Area and in school. I am proud of all they do in their ministries. May God continue to bless them and the people they serve.
I was privileged to attend the Awards Vespers Service last evening at St. Patrick’s church Fremont, NE. There were about 24 awards given in all from the Omaha Diocese. The 9 of us Sisters from West Point who were able to attend and receive the award were honored and humbled by the presentation of the award by Archbishop Curtiss and by the attendance of so many of our parishioners from St. Mary’s West Point who had come to show support of “their Sisters”. Working with the people and living in West Point, NE is truly a blessing.

There is no doubt our Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity who pioneered our presence in West Point (along with all the good people who have welcomed us along the way) were proudly present in spirit as well. Your work with God through the Church for others, especially the elderly in West Point, is a blessing to that community and to all of us.
