Pillars of the Church Depicted

Posted on June 29, 2008

img_4324_0894.jpgSt. Francis Chapel in the Motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity visualizes the reality of Sts. Peter and Paul being pillars of the Church. Find both saints guarding the tabernacle of an altar carved by an Australian artisan early in the history of this religious community. On this Sunday people of God around the world celebrate in solemnity the dedication of these two teachers of the faith.

Benedict XVI has also declared June 2008-June 2009 the year of St. Paul in celebration of the 2,000th anniversary of the saint’s birth. “May he (God) guide us and protect us in this bimillenary celebration,” the Pope added, “helping us to advance in the humble and sincere search for the full unity of all the members of the mystical body of Christ.”

When’s the last time you paged through one of St. Paul’s letters in your Bible? What inspires you about this Apostle to the Gentiles?

Franciscan Sisters’ Vocation Prayer Day

Posted on June 25, 2008
Filed Under Franciscanized World | 5 Comments

img_4316_0881-copy.jpgAlthough the Franciscan Sisters pray for all those answering the call to marriage, priesthood, the single life and the consecrated life every day, today, June 25, 2008, is designated as a special community day of prayer for young women contemplating the call to be Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.

This over twenty year old Motherhouse tradition  is typically celebrated in the summer time and includes Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction. This year the Franciscan Sisters will be praying the Office of Holy Women for Morning and Evening Prayer. Prayer aids for individual personal img_4318_0883.jpgreflection include some quotes from Franciscan women religious: St. Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Clare of Assisi, Mother Edna Ryan, OSF and Sister Henrielda Cloutier, OSF.

Sister Henrielda  also initiated the practice of setting aside the the third Saturday of each month as a special day of prayer for vocations in September 1971. She is remembered for writing: “‘Christian sisterhood is not an ideal which we must realize; it is a reality created by img_4322_0887.jpgGod in Jesus Christ in which we participate.’ Recognizing that the center and strength of our religious life rests in Jesus Christ we are grateful for this gift. We live together as a sign of hope and we do together what we cannot do alone.”

Consider this retreat opportunity.

Sister Chiara is Received into the Novitiate

img_1851_2nd.JPGOn June 13, 2008, the Franciscan feast of St. Anthony of Padua, the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity witnessed the Rite of Initiation into Religious Life for Sister Chiara (Angela) LaValley, OSF. The ceremony occured at 7:15 p.m. in St. Mary Chapel.

At the beginning of the ceremony, Sister Louise Hembrecht, Community Director, questioned Angela about her desires for her life. She responded: “Drawn by God’s mercy, I have come here to learn your way of life. I ask you to teach me to follow Christ crucified and to live in st-anthony-of-padua-777th-anniversary-tribute-2008-by-stephen-b-whatley.jpgchastity, poverty and obedience. Teach me to persevere in prayer and penance, in the service of the Church and mankind. Teach me to be one with you in heart and mind. Help me to live out the Gospel every day of my life. Teach me your Rule and help me to learn to love our Sisters as Christ commanded us. ” (painting by Stephen B. Whatley on the 777 feastday of St. Anthony)

After being questioned again whether it was her wish to learn the way of life of a Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity and she replied “Yes, it is”, Angela received her habit, veil, signs of the consecrated life, as well as her Sister name, Sister Chiara.

img_2326.JPGSister Natalie Binversie, OSF, was entrusted with the responsiblity to carry out the purpose of the Novitiate which is to ensure that the novice learns the primary essentials of Religious Life and to live out the evangelical counsels.

Come Holy Ghost/Enkindle by Kataluma

995951165_98e31690e5_m.jpgIn Luke’s gospel, the Greek word Kataluma designates by implication a lodging place. Mark uses it to describe “Dining Room” where the Last Supper takes place (and, some suggest, the same room where Pentecost occurred). More commonly, it describes the ‘breaking up or reprieve of a journey’. (photo taken by Giovanni Portelli)

144460259_4d30af60c9.jpgKataluma is also the name of an occasional coalescence of Wisconsin musicians and creatives. In this instance, it comprises John Tanner, Sue Bruk, Bob Monagle and Mark Kolter, who fashioned a transglobal approach to the hymn “Come Holy Ghost/Enkindle” as an energetic meditation for Catholic young adults, those recently confirmed and those preparing to attend World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia. (photo taken by yewenwi)

2259683275_c7d55736ae.jpgMr. Tanner is an experienced studio musician and highly regarded composer, with over twenty years of experience in scoring, arranging and music composition for television, radio, and theatre. His music is heard in commercials for Sprint, Bird’s Eye, Sears and as original scores and arrangements for the Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s “A Christmas Carol” since 1984, the American Player Theater’s productions of “Richard III”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “phedre”, and “The Learned Ladies”. (photo taken by Giovanni Portelli)

Mr. Tanner engineered the Violent Femmes’ album, “Violent Femmes”, which garnered both Gold and Platinum sales certification. His commercial music has won numerous awards, including Golden Reel Awards from the International Television Association for industrial video projects; Telly Awards; national, regional and local American Advertising Federation “Addys”, Silver Microphone awards, and RAC Awards for retail advertising. Find out more at http://www.tannermonagle.com.

Ms. Bruk’s exceptional singing can be heard in many different commercials and productions, and she also writes music for and sings with the group, “Sacrifice of Praise”. http://www.sacrificeofpraiseonline.com

“Sacrifice of Praise” is known for tight harmonies, spirits that encourage and personal testimonies of God’s faithfulness. Their latest CD, You Carry Me celebrates and reflects on God’s unfailing faithfulness in the times of life’s greatest uncertainties.

Mr. Monagle plays guitar extraordinarily well.

wyd08logo.gifMr. Kolter is a songwriter and creative counsel. “I thought those traveling to Catholic World Youth Day, and those who wanted to go but couldn’t, might appreciate, enjoy a song that was uplifting, and also incorporated instrumentations and rhythms from around the world. ‘Come Holy Ghost’ seemed appropriate since the theme correlated with the ‘Holy Spirit’ theme of World Youth Day 2008.

‘Enkindle’ evolved from another instrumental ‘Tangiers Lantern Twilight’ that evoked a geographic journey into the spiritual journey on traveling to WYD. Now it’s sort of fused together with ‘Come Holy Ghost’, less a medley, more a musical marriage.”

363993700_c4ae6ecdd6.jpg“Come Holy Ghost/Enkindle” begins with a ’summons’ to Sydney, played on an Aborigine Didgeridoo. Just as Catholic youth from around the world will bring their own culture and gifts to Sydney, you might then hear bits and pieces of different rhythms, from Catalonian to Congolese, and instruments from all over-a saz, or lute from Greece, accordian from Germany, electric guitar and dulcimer from the United States, kalimba from Angola, rain stick from Guatemala, harp from Ireland. (photo taken by Giovanni Portelli)

In deference to Pope Benedict XVI’s favorite composer, we even mixed in a brief passage from Mozart’s ‘Rondo Alla Turca’. Also, there’s a bit of Gregorian Chant.

2391867119_c2b538c115.jpgSaid Kolter “We recorded several verses, and took sort of a remix approach to structuring the basic material. We decided to end with the first half of verse three, with respect to the many pilgrims coming to WYD who recently have been or soon will be confirmed and becoming spiritual adults, invested with ‘the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit’. It’s open ended-just like being confirmed: what will you do with gifts you’ve been given?” http://www.wyd2008.org/ (photo taken by Giovanni Portelli)

Franciscan Sisters Honor the Unique Service of Priests

Posted on June 3, 2008
Filed Under Franciscanized World | 6 Comments

copy-of-img_1686.JPGEverything that [Saint Francis] said to [the brothers] in word, however, he would show them in deed with eagerness and affection. He used to revere prelates and priests of the holy Church, and honored the elderly, the noble, and the wealthy. Moreover, he intimately loved the poor, suffering deeply with them, and he showed himself subject to all…he wanted priests who handle the tremendous and greatest sacraments to be honored uniquely…. (The Legend of Three Companions)

Like the Seraphic Francis, the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity foster reverence to priests and deacons who generously serve God and neighbor. During this season of ordination anniversaries, the Sisters remember these servants who are and have served with the Congregation in meeting the needs of the current time with vitality, adaptability, and dedication.

events_1158.jpgSeminarians also receive supportive prayer and personal communications throughout their years of study. Father Dan Schuster, grand nephew of Sister Virginette Schuster, and cousin of Sister Carol Mathe and Sister Barbara Mathe, presided at the 7:05 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. Eucharistic Liturgies today at the Motherhouse in gratitude for the community’s prayers during his preparation for the priesthood. Father Dan was ordained on May 31, 2008 at St. Francis Cathedral, Green Bay. Do you have any unique words of affirmation and encouragement for these men of God?
