Come Holy Ghost/Enkindle by Kataluma

In Luke’s gospel, the Greek word Kataluma designates by implication a lodging place. Mark uses it to describe “Dining Room” where the Last Supper takes place (and, some suggest, the same room where Pentecost occurred). More commonly, it describes the ‘breaking up or reprieve of a journey’. (photo taken by Giovanni Portelli)
Kataluma is also the name of an occasional coalescence of Wisconsin musicians and creatives. In this instance, it comprises John Tanner, Sue Bruk, Bob Monagle and Mark Kolter, who fashioned a transglobal approach to the hymn “Come Holy Ghost/Enkindle” as an energetic meditation for Catholic young adults, those recently confirmed and those preparing to attend World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia. Mr. Tanner is an experienced studio musician and highly regarded composer, with over twenty years of experience in scoring, arranging and music composition for television, radio, and theatre. His music is heard in commercials for Sprint, Bird’s Eye, Sears and as original scores and arrangements for the Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s “A Christmas Carol” since 1984, the American Player Theater’s productions of “Richard III”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “phedre”, and “The Learned Ladies”. Mr. Kolter is a songwriter and creative counsel. “I thought those traveling to Catholic World Youth Day, and those who wanted to go but couldn’t, might appreciate, enjoy a song that was uplifting, and also incorporated instrumentations and rhythms from around the world. ‘Come Holy Ghost’ seemed appropriate since the theme correlated with the ‘Holy Spirit’ theme of World Youth Day 2008.
‘Enkindle’ evolved from another instrumental ‘Tangiers Lantern Twilight’ that evoked a geographic journey into the spiritual journey on traveling to WYD. Now it’s sort of fused together with ‘Come Holy Ghost’, less a medley, more a musical marriage.”
“Come Holy Ghost/Enkindle” begins with a ’summons’ to Sydney, played on an Aborigine Didgeridoo. Just as Catholic youth from around the world will bring their own culture and gifts to Sydney, you might then hear bits and pieces of different rhythms, from Catalonian to Congolese, and instruments from all over-a saz, or lute from Greece, accordian from Germany, electric guitar and dulcimer from the United States, kalimba from Angola, rain stick from Guatemala, harp from Ireland. In deference to Pope Benedict XVI’s favorite composer, we even mixed in a brief passage from Mozart’s ‘Rondo Alla Turca’. Also, there’s a bit of Gregorian Chant.
Said Kolter “We recorded several verses, and took sort of a remix approach to structuring the basic material. We decided to end with the first half of verse three, with respect to the many pilgrims coming to WYD who recently have been or soon will be confirmed and becoming spiritual adults, invested with ‘the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit’. Kataluma’s humbly-talented musicians make this passage from Acts 2 come alive in our current day: “When the day of Pentecost came it found them gathered in one place (Tanger-Monagle studio to be exact-although not all physically present at one time- but truly “mixed” as one united whole). Suddenly from up in the sky there came a noise like a strong, driving wind (the Aborigine Didgeridoo fits this perfectly)…all were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to express themselves…and make bold proclamation as the Spirit prompted them.” THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE SPIRIT WITH US. PEACE AND ALL GOOD!
This piece of music is truly amazing! Mark Kolter is to be commended for unifying all the instruments with the vocals, melody,etc. His remarks are important to understanding the beauty of Holy Ghost/Enkindle.
The initial primitive sound of the Didgeridoo and energetic rhythmic emphasis open the musical selection for this month. How many people today hear or sing the hymn, “Come, Holy Ghost?” Although this is the title, the actual words are first heard about 2 and 1/2 minutes into the recording. The melody to the 19th century hymn is heard in bits throughout the piece.
Multiple listening to the song reveal a more complex composition than first expected. Our daily lives are also complicated. Each day may begin simply with a plan for prayer, work, family and meals.
However, as the minutes and hours unfold, changes occur that lead to a profound belief in the Spirit who leads us through the ups and downs of each moment. It should be our fervent prayer that the Spirit be with each of us as we make daily decisions and we should pray especially for the youth of today who are faced with numerous challenges.
I listen to this hauntingly beautiful piece over and over like I cannot get enough of it… The Holy Spirit is moving within this musical inspiration and also within me as I delve deeper into the mystery of God’s presence in and around me! Thank you so much for using your gifts to share this movement!
This song made me feel something inside of me that I have not felt for a while. It sort of a tingling feeling in my heart. I used to feel it when I went to vespers in Poland. Only it was a stronger feeling then. As if a wall of sound was surrounding me and the sound waves were getting in to my body. I always felt like God was talking to my heart when I went to vespers but I did not know what he was saying. I didn’t really care if I knew or not either I just liked the way it felt. Thanks for putting this song up.

I found that this song was very uniqe. the singer had her own style and i liked it. i found it somewhat soothing.
It is a cool song, beautiful, makes me think of freedom. It has a gentle strength to it. I loved all the instruments!
This is one of the nicest and most peaceful songs that I have listened to. I really liked all the cool instrumentals used in this song. I also liked how it wasn’t filled with words and the few words that were sung were meaningful. It was just a very calming and soothing song to listen to.
In my opinion the song is good because it has a nice steady beat. It lets you meditate and you can feel the presense of the holy spirit through your body. I like the choice of instruments. I like the acoustic guitar and the technique of classical music mixed with others. I especially the bongo (drums) because they make you want to get up and DANCE!!!!

the song was different im sure to most youth of this generation, as the basic tunes of the instruments in the song combined together like a pile of muddy rocks made into a building… both touching in a way and represent something different to every individual… It let one exlplore their imagination into a cast of memories… Remembering… Relaxed… and Motivated! As it carried on it got INSPIRATIONAL WITH WORDS COMBINED AND MADE ME WANT TO DANCE!!!!…but the song ended!

I was surprised at how few words were used in this song, but I didn’t care. The instruments, the rhythm - that’s what got my attention. I feel like I can clear my mind the best when I listen to music and find that it is one of the easiest ways for me to pray.
I think the tune of the song was very relaxing but at the same time interesting to listen to.
I enjoyed the song because it was calming and just had me at peace. I found the lyrics to be pretty inspiring. I liked the beat of the instruments and just basically the song.

This song compromises many unique sounds around the world, representing the many cultures and from where they came. It brings to mind all the unique qualities of each of the young women here at Camp Franciscan, each sharing their own unique qualities, creating a wonderful melody for the Lord.
I did like the song. The words and the instruments. The voice was a little irritating but the music was soothing enough to not really care.
I thought this song had a real feeling. It reminded me of when i was a little kid, and we were in band/music class. We would use every kind of instrument in the room, and we would keep the beat, the rhythm of the instruments running through our minds. I could feel the the flow of the voice, our teacher, with her strong voice. This song showed me all different cultures and how they can all work together.

I liked the song because it isn’t a song you hear everyday.There are different instruments, kind of not a lot of singing, which makes more attention on the unfamiliar instruments.
The song was awsome because it reminded me of the holy spirit moving to guide other people to Jesus because it was a fast moving song.

I really felt a sense of peace and comfort within me as I listened to this song. The spirit works in so many beautiful ways and I thought that the spirit really was moving in me during this song. It has such meaning and inspiration to live out, and to take the joy of christ with you.
