Pillars of the Church Depicted

St. Francis Chapel in the Motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity visualizes the reality of Sts. Peter and Paul being pillars of the Church. Find both saints guarding the tabernacle of an altar carved by an Australian artisan early in the history of this religious community. On this Sunday people of God around the world celebrate in solemnity the dedication of these two teachers of the faith.
Benedict XVI has also declared June 2008-June 2009 the year of St. Paul in celebration of the 2,000th anniversary of the saint’s birth. “May he (God)Â guide us and protect us in this bimillenary celebration,” the Pope added, “helping us to advance in the humble and sincere search for the full unity of all the members of the mystical body of Christ.”
When’s the last time you paged through one of St. Paul’s letters in your Bible? What inspires you about this Apostle to the Gentiles?

Paging through just the first seven verses of Paul’s letter to the Romans, I was reminded that Paul was a man who truly felt CALLED. Yes, he was “CALLED TO BE an apostle, (CALLED TO BE)set apart to proclaim the gospel of God…CALLED to belong to Jesus Christ, CALLED to holiness, grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” I couldn’t help but read these verses one more time with this sound track playing in the background…

Suggestion: try it yourself and reflect on what you are called to be. Are you called to be a Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity? The world needs you. God calls you. We invite you.
One other thought…this prayer to the Apostle Paul is found on another Catholic website. The words that are capitalized are ones that sound much like St. Francis’s Prayer Before the Crucifix. (St. Francis and St. Paul would approve of their being associated together.)
GLORIOUS St. Paul most zealous apostle, martyr for the love of Christ,
GIVE US A DEEP FAITH, A STEADFAST HOPE,
a burning love for our Lord (A PERFECT CHARITY) so that we can proclaim with you “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”
Help us to become apostles serving the Church with a pure heart, witnesses to her truth and beauty amidst the darkness of our days.
