Advent Getaway for Women Only

Young women abandoned all other plans to retreat with the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity in Manitowoc, WI on December 5-7, 2008. Sounds like mission impossible at this time of the year? Not really. Delving into mystery, the retreatants were prompted by God and made a choice to learn about the art of intimacy, contemplated the Blessed Mother’s life and focused on the season of Advent’s rich symbolism in communal and individual prayer experiences.
Other weekend highlights included:
- Evening lake-side bonfire
- Campfire conversation with Sister Marcolette Madden, OSF and Sister Caritas Marie Le Claire, OSF
- Solitude balanced with sharing with others
- Sacrament of Reconciliation
- Hiking in snow-covered trails
- Music Outreach at Saturday Evening Eucharist- St. Michael Parish, Whitelaw, WI
- One on one time with young women who are in the process of becoming Franciscan Sisters
- Sunday Eucharist and Morning Prayer with the Sisters
- Reflection on the Advent readings
- Healthy, plentiful meals
If you feel like you have read about these getaways before, you have. There are two more retreats planned February 20-22 and May 29-31, 2009.

It is helping me to discern if I have a vocation in the religious life, educate and strengthen my faith and knowledge about God. I like to be able to relate to others who are going through the same experiences I am having: where does God want me?
It is a blessing to have you, and the other young women, spend the weekend retreat with us Marie! Your openess and faith are signs of God’s goodness in you! Thank you for sharing so much of your self with us and all who participated in this Advent retreat time!
Marie, we’ve been blessed in standing by you as you ask the important questions. Thanks for introducing your parents to us. What a wonderful family you have!
This retreat opened my mind to new experiences and a different way to live as a Sister. It also touched my heart how welcoming and kind everyone was especially Sister Mary Ann and Sister Julie Ann. Everyone was so eager to teach us about themselves and hear/learn about us and our goals.
Heather, enjoy singing all the Christmas songs…especially ‘Mary Did You Know’. The Lord bless you.
You have a great sense of humor Heather which added a lot to the retreat! May Jesus continue to guide you into His path of peace! Thank you for sharing yourself with us!
It was a real privilege to join Heather, Marie, Sister Caritas Marie, Sister Julie Ann, and Sister Mary Ann during last Friday evening’s retreat. The laughter and conversation around the fire in the boathouse set a nice tone for sharing our vocation stories.
There are so many options regarding life choices for women in today’s society. Some questions that seem central to the discernment process include: “What would make your heart sing?” “What is worth your life’s investment?”
I commend Marie and Heather for taking steps along the journey, and Sister Mary Ann and Sister Julie Ann for providing such supportive guidance.
Sister Marcolette
The mystery of God’s action in each person’s life is as varied and complex as the snowflake. (Yes, the winter weather here in WI is providing plentiful examples of this symmetrical wonder!) Our Sisters’ stories, wisdom and wit reveal God’s marvelous ways of leading and waiting for response. Thanks again, Sister Marcolette, for being one of those great tellers of truth.
I am grateful to Sister Julie Ann, Sister Mary Ann and all those who make these week-end Retreats happen. How wonderful for these young women to be able to come to our Motherhouse and experience such joy even for a couple of days. God is truly working through you to touch the lives of others.
