sfwailing_small.jpgOffering insightful poetic lyrics at a time when some families are facing a winter season with escalating needs, the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity feature folk-rock singer/songwriter Steve Forbert’s ‘Don’t Look Down, Pollyanna’.

Comments from Steve Forbert

“Don’t Look Down, Pollyanna” is clearly a song about America today—all of the foreclosures  taking place and the people out of (what were) their homes. One reads the statistics—the numbers coming out of  government monitoring agencies and the financial institutions, but where are all of the people going? Everyone knows we’re not still talking about secondary residences and failed attempts at flipping condos in Miami. Are we talking about the waiting list for a tent village near Tampa? As far as the song’s title, anyone familiar with the (underrated) Disney film will recall Hayley Mills (literally out on a limb) sneaking out of her upstairs window in order to attend the town bazaar. Of course the peak scene is the one where the town preacher ’sees the light’ thanks to that wonderfully wise little girl and a quote from Abraham Lincoln (but I still prefer Mrs. Snow beside the fishing booth making sure Pollyanna wins a doll!)

About Steve Forbert

forbertheadshot1-8-2009_small.jpgEarning wide acclaim as the “new (Bob) Dylan in the seventies, Steve Forbert was born in Meridian, MS. After learning to play the guitar/harmonica at an early age he eventually made steps to become a professional musician in New York City. Since his debut, Steve has released twelve albums, all of which exemplify his lasting originality in a blend of folk and rock music.

In 2010 he is a songwriter who not only appears comfortable with his place in life, but who also still rejects a nine-to-five existence in favor of following his own road-less-traveled.“Music should be truthful and real,” Forbert once said, “but it should also be uplifting and healing.” That’s a philosophy he’ll be honoring throughout this new year as he continues to share a rare creative talent that is ever new not only with a loyal fan base but with us here at Franciscanized World. Help us spread his uniquely-personalized world view with others.

Lyrics: Don’t Look Down, Pollyanna

The sidewalk spiel, it’s no big deal,

The traffic lights are blinking just the same;

The church bell tolls for hearts and souls,

And ev’ry moth is flapping toward a flame.

Don’t look down, Pollyanna,

Don’t look down at all;

Shreveport, Louisiana

Is just as high as Niag’ra Falls.

You feel as if you’re over a barrel,

You think you might be close to the edge,

You’re hopin’ there’ll be somebody there who’ll

Get you back in tact off the ledge.

Your west side home they foreclosed on

Is someone else’s dream come true today;

At near half price it must feel nice

To wake up with a mortgage one can pay.

Don’t look down, Pollyanna,

Don’t look down at all,

Shreveport, Louisiana

Is just as high as Niag’ra Falls.

You feel as if you’re over a barrel,

You think you might go straight down the drain,

You’re hopin’ there’ll be somebody there who’ll

Zap you back t’ Hackberry Lane.

The World And How To Work It

Is a book you should’ve read,

There should’ve been a copy on the night stand by your bed;

Life And How To Live It

Is another good choice as well–

The new large print edition and a fairly clean hotel…

A sweet soul blast from days gone past

Is bouncing off the Greyhound station wall;

A safe past tense that makes good sense

And now is somewhat painful to recall.

Don’t look down, Pollyanna,

Don’t look down at all; Shreveport, Louisiana

Is just as high as Nia’gra Falls.

You feel as if you’re over a barrel,

You think you might be close to the end,

You’re hopin’ there’ll be somebody there who’ll

Get you back on track once again.

How do you do? A ‘Pollyanna’ typical expression and Steve’s reality lyrics on this first day of a new year encourage self-reflection and positive living. Are we persons of hope who believe ‘Someone is there to get us back on track once again’?

  • Elizabeth

    I like this song!

  • Raliegh

    I like this song!

‘Glad’ to receive your responses, Elizabeth and Raliegh. You are right. It is difficult not to like Steve’s music.

  • Leslie

My Mom used to call me Pollyanna especially when I was very small. She’d be complaining because it had rained for five days in a row or something and I would say “Don’t hate the rain. It makes things grow.” She’d say okay Pollyanna hopefully it doesn’t make things grow six days in a row.

I can see the Hayley resemblence…but you may need to work on the accent?! Thanks for the delightful memory, Leslie. What would we do without rain? Just like this song’s lyrics, your childhood wisdom is worth contemplating more than once.

  • Jane

Disney starlet ‘Pollyanna’ would also ‘like’ these affirmative comments. Thanks, Jane.

  • Sister Carla Riach

This song is a good reflection of society today. I feel for those who aren’t sure there is someone there for them. Our God of unconditional love and forgiveness is the only “for sure” person there for each of us. May 2010 be a year of growth in our relationship with God.

How great to have access to a song just released in Oct. 2009! I was captured by the comments on books that should have been read: “The World and How to Work It” and “Life and How to Live It”. It is a common illusion that we can learn work or life or love or empathy by intellectualizing… reading a book “about” something. The Incarnation calls us to experience work, life, love etc. firsthand. This is where we experience divinity!

This song captivated my thoughts, heart and attention. I think Steve Forbert has a message that can propel us to further reflection and may motivate us to see the presence of Jesus in our everyday trials and struggles. Thank you for making this available.

A new year recalls all the experiences and wonders in life and begs for hope that wisdom will follow. May this song help ignite a new kind of fire…a God who is always with us. Let’s play that again.

  • Sister Sean Marie

God is always there for us. All one needs to do is open the door of our heart, the windows of our five senses and let Him work. Alot of the world excites and incites us from the outside but only He can transform us from within.

‘You feel you might be close to the end’ has new meaning with the miracle stories of the people of Haiti found alive by family members many days after the earth’s uprising. It is difficult to imagine all the feelings that this natural event has caused and all the compassion that has come from other people around the world.

“Life And How To Live It
Is another good choice as well–”

This line of Steve’s song is a great example of today’s life announcement of Grant Desme–a 23-year-old minor league outfielder in Oakland’s system, is retiring from baseball to follow a calling into the Catholic priesthood.

Said Desme on a Friday afternoon conference call:

I’m doing well in baseball. But I had to get down to the bottom of things, to what was good in my life, what I wanted to do with my life. Baseball is a good thing, but that felt selfish of me when I felt that God was calling me more. It took awhile to trust that and open up to it and aim full steam toward him … I love the game, but I’m going to aspire to higher things.”

When listening to music God challenges me to open up my mind to the numerous meanings that the song could posess, most of the time when I have to honestly listen to a song, like this one, I find out a lot or my faults and music opens my eyes to how I can live my life in a greater way for God’s glory.

  • Nicole

Everyone is equal in God’s eyes no matter where they come from or how they were raised. It is amazing how once we stand before the Lord, all our material possessions melt away. The facades we try so hard to hide behind fall to the ground until it is just us and God.

This song made me realize how much I take for granted in my life.

  • Tessa

This music is something I can understand. I can hear God’s wonder as I listen.

  • Morgan

We all want some inspirational guidance–someone to be right there helping us! This song helps me not to get down or too down on myself.

  • Emily

Everything that is given to us from God should be celebrated. If we do this, we will be able to get over the rough patches in our life, and in the end those difficult times won’t be that bad.

  • AC

Peaceful, positive, hopeful, nature…Live life in a simplistic way, look on the bright side!

  • Hannah

Everything is going on around us. It is important to stop and realize that we can do comething to help. If it is a stressful situation, or we can contribute to a good situation to make it better. Don’t look down” on situations that could change your life or the life of another person.

  • El

The song is really interesting! It can really be applied to everyday life. Everyone at one point in their life can feel like tat they are on the edge of a cliff. The song talks about someone being there to catch us if we jump or fall, and we always do have someone–we always have God.

Be careful–don’t try to fall off cliffs, but if you do, God will be there to catch you!

  • Anne

    -relaxation/peace
    -try to stay positive
-very truthful about the sadness/emptiness of many people

  • Brianna

the simple things in life that people take for granted, being overwhelmed and having no one to turn to for help

  • Julia

The line”Shreveport, LA is just as high as Niagrara Falls” was interesting–like…even some totally seemingly benign city has places to “fall” from.

This song tells me that there is somebody there who’ll get you back on track once again–after you fall, you always look for someone to pick you up again.

  • Nicole

    Peace,,,do not give up!

  • Laura

That although mere may be setbacks in our lives, but to never give up, especially on God. He is always with us no matter how alone we feel. God will always be there suffering along with us, ready to pick us back up when we fall. Never give up faith!

  • Courtney

Very calming and it has to do with current events that people today are dealing with. Sounds a lot like the singer Jack Johnson. Steve has a really good voice that could help a person to calm down and focus!

  • Sam

Reminds me of the Dave Matthews’ band. Easy to listen to…made me feel happy.

  • Heather

The song reminds me of some of Jack Johnson’s songs/music!

  • Beta

He is always with us during good times and badk when we’re close to the edge or falling or getting up. Always! His love never ends!

  • Anna

Knowing that our leaps in life don’t have to be scary–don’t be afraid to jump!

  • Bethany

This song takes some bad situations, but it makes them sound so carefree, like they don’t matter and there are more important things in life. It tells me not to worry about the small insignificant things.

  • Rachael

Music is a big part of my life and when I listen to music, I take the words to heart. Music is also a way for me to see my life in a different perspective and most of the lyrics relate to what I’m going through now in my life.

  • Lauren

I thought of someone helping me when I was down. It reminded me that I’m not the only one who feels like I’m on the edge and need someone to pull me back up.

  • Erin

We must never look back but instead look forward. Also we must find someone in our life that we can look up to and go for advice.

  • Tori

God is our hope. He will help us in everway he can. Music is how He expresses things we don’t hear another way.

  • Brooke

-just sitting in the presence of God, with no worries or thoughts to bother me
-no matter what happens to me, I’ll always have someone to run to, to talk to and be loved by

  • Libby

Words can never hurt you as long as you have God. This song also tells me that I need to stop and smell the flowers, it has a good beat!

  • Kristen

I heard something like it’s all about the choices you make. So maybe like, make good choices in your life which lead you to God.

  • Lauren

It makes me realize God loves me and really does want the best for us. It tells me to get my life back on the right track again!

  • Megan

The song is very relaxing to me. It reminds me to not worry about things I can’t control, God will take care of me.

  • Alex

I think the lyrics are talking about appreciating each moment in life as God gives it to us and not to be caught ‘looking down’ because we could miss out on a blessing God has in store.

  • Y.J.

I think I’ve been to Shreveport, Louisianna!

  • A.

in the tough times, we hope God will be there for us to help us out.
sometimes the right song comes on at the right time and things start to make sense.

  • A.N.

God will bring us hope during the hard times. Music catches my attention.

  • Kayla

it’s sad that people’s lives can take a bad turn, but God will always be there to help.

  • Bethany

In the phrase “you hope that someone is there who gets you back on track” got me thinking that, that someone is God, he will get us back on track if we just ask for his help.

  • Manda

    Pollyanna? Life sometimes is hard.

  • Lindsey

When I listen to this song it just makes me smile. Its a calm song that you can listen to and relax and think.
