When Postulants Are Sent to Arizona Missions

by Sister Julie Ann on May 4, 2011

Go west to the Arizona missions.  Aside from enjoying pure desert adventure, Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Postulants Rose, Leslie and Lindsey were sent Sunday, May 1, 2011 to experience the daily lives of our Sisters within three of our community’s long term apostolic ministries. This is another  important step in  feeling at home within our Franciscan Congregation.

Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Postulants depart for the Community's Arizona mission sites to experience the daily lives of the Sisters.

Our warm connection with the Grand Canyon state has strong, solid grounding in the desert sands. Rose will see first hand our service at Immaculate Conception Parish and School, Yuma, a place where we have been since 1930. Today our Sisters are also present at Yuma Catholic High School.

The beginnings of  our community’s service on an Arizona reservation began in 1936. Lindsey will walk with our Sisters in Tucson at San Xavier Mission/School on the Tohono O’odham Reservation. Our Sisters have been here for 70 years. She will also witness a more recent outreach by our community at Santa Cruz Parish/School on the southside of Tucson. Near the Phoenix area, Leslie will see the Franciscan spirit lived among the Gila River Indian Community at St. Peter Mission, Bapchule.

Looks like you are enjoying your first days in Arizona and getting a taste of the abundant sunshine. Many blessings upon each of you as you experience life in another culture and become part of another one of our community's missions. God's hand is at work in many different ways in the lives of each of us. May you cherish these blessed moments.

Rose has had her hands in many things since she arrived in Yuma. Today she is spending the day at Yuma Catholic High School. She is presently touring our beautiful southwest campus with Sister Alexandra. Later she will observe or dig into the pregnant rats with the Honors Anatomy and Physiology class Sr. Jan teaches. This is the final exam for the students JUST BEFORE LUNCH TODAY. It goes on all week. So Rose can come back for more.

How wonderful to see our Postulants already actively engaged in their mission experience. They look as if they are enjoying it. May God's blessings be upon them as they experience more of community living and work in the Apostolate.

It is so neat to see each of you getting involved in the life of our missions in the southwest! Each of these sites is very dear to my heart, although I must admit I am partial to Yuma having lived there for seven years!!! Know of my continued prayers for each of you and the Sisters!

  • Rose

I am loving every minute here in Yuma so far and it's only day 3! Everyone has gone above and beyond in their warm welcomes, parents, teachers, the sisters and kids alike! They are all so wonderful!! Thanks for all the prayers back home!

This explains the intensive study at the tables in one of the photos! Thanks, Sister Jan, for explaining the seriousness of this lesson!

  • Sister Anne Marie Lom

I am praying each of our postulants can enjoy, admire, be inspired and have great fun living with and helping our sisters in the west. The pictures featuring sunshine are so appreciated as WI struggles to let spring “happen”.

Rose is enjoying her experience at Immaculate Conception School. Our students are very welcoming and she is catching the beautiful spirit of the Southwest. Last evening we invited Marilyn Dias and her sister Alejandra to join us for supper. We had a wonderful time visiting and telling stories. Rose will be spending a couple of days with me in the Music room next week.

  • Sister Natalie

Thank you for sharing your experiences via photo! We can all enjoy being in Arizona with you! Your experiences help me recall my ministry in Arizona and the people who helped make it a time of blessing. You are all missed and in daily prayer!

  • Sister Anne Marie Lom

Thanks for the additional pictures. Rose, are you partial to pictures of roses?

  • empi99

welcome to Yuma, we hope you enjoy the furnace-esque weather.

  • Ariel

Thank you for coming to our school.

  • Rose

I do love to take pictures of roses, flowers in general! Its always so easy to capture their beauty! :)

  • Sister Kay

I'm loving the pictures! So glad that you are experiencing the West missions. I have seen all of them. Look for my footprints at Yuma! I taught first grade there for five years. Enjoy the beauty of the nature but most of the all the beauty of the people!

  • Sister Anne Marie Lom

Safe travels to all. I'll be eager to see you in Manitowoc in June. Enjoy each moment departing, journeying and arriving.

Rose, we really enjoyed having you in Yuma! My daughter thought you were really nice. I would have to agree with that statement. Thank you for stopping by my classroom, too! I pray for God's blessings as you continue your journey in June. Keep in touch.

  • Sister Marie Bernadette Dorn

Congratulations to all three of you. It is nice to see senic sites of the state. However, the best sites are right at home and in your heart. Enjoy them and listen to them no matter where you are in life.

  • Alarsen

I hope they enjoy this time in Arizona! What about the fourth postulant? Where is she?

  • Scaritas

What marvelous experiences for the three of you. I remember my first (and only) trip to the Arizona missions. We stayed at St. John's, Komatke, while doing a research project for the Papago  Tribe at St. peter's. Sr. Veronica B. pinned yellow crepe flowers on top of the cactus ouside the kitchen window…adn we believed they were real!!! until she clued us in. The dessert did bloom and it was truly one of God's marvelous miracles. Bless each of you for pictures of where you stayed and your experiences. You bring these missions much closer to home when we “see” thru your own eyes the beauty of each of these places. Blessings to each of you as you now celebrate with family and friends. The plastic eggs in the court came down just in time for the Magnolia blossoms to start coming out!!! Take care and God bless.
